Boston, Massachusetts – A flood watch remains in effect for southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island throughout this Sunday, September 13, 2026. The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton has confirmed that flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible across the region. Residents are advised that the current flood watch is active until 6 PM EDT this evening.
According to the National Weather Service Boston/Norton, the weather conditions are the result of excessive rainfall impacting the area. The forecast indicates that isolated heavy downpours occurring this Sunday afternoon over already saturated grounds may lead to isolated instances of flash flooding. These conditions have the potential to impact both low lying and flood prone locations, as well as urban areas and regions with poor drainage.
The geographic scope of the watch includes a wide array of communities in both states. Affected areas in Massachusetts include Northern Bristol, Western Plymouth, Eastern Plymouth, Southern Bristol, Southern Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket. Specific cities listed within these zones include Nantucket, Mattapoisett, Brockton, Falmouth, New Bedford, Taunton, Provincetown, Chatham, Plymouth, Fall River, and surrounding locations.
Rhode Island communities are also under the watch, covering Northwest Providence, Southeast Providence, Western Kent, Eastern Kent, Bristol, Washington, Newport, and Block Island. Cities named in the service area include Smithfield, Warwick, Coventry, Westerly, New Shoreham, East Greenwich, West Warwick, Foster, Bristol, Newport, Providence, Narragansett, and West Greenwich. Vineyard Haven is also included in the affected list.
The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor later forecasts and stay alert for the possibility of formal Flood Warnings being issued. Those living in areas known to be prone to flooding should remain prepared to take immediate action should flooding develop in their immediate vicinity. Further safety information regarding these weather hazards can be found at the official government website at http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood.
