Boston, MA – Massachusetts is moving deeper into its October frost season as cooler air arrives this week, though the immediate forecast does not indicate a widespread frost or freeze.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, scattered showers will develop Sunday afternoon and evening as weak low pressure passes offshore. The greatest rain chances are expected along the South Coast, Cape Cod and the Islands.
The cooler pattern arriving behind the system comes during the time of year when many New England communities increasingly watch for their first frost. Inland areas typically cool faster than Boston and coastal communities, but the timing varies considerably by location and year. The NWS has not indicated a frost or freeze threat with this particular forecast.
For Sunday, rain chances remain relatively low around Boston, peaking near 40% during the evening. Chances are higher farther south and southeast.
Hyannis has rain chances reaching around 60%, while Nantucket peaks near 70%. New Bedford reaches around 55%, with Newport near 55% and Providence around 45%.
Showers should diminish overnight into early Monday as the weak system moves away.
Cooler temperatures will then spread across southern New England for the beginning of the workweek, marking another step toward more typical mid autumn conditions.
Residents tracking the first frost should continue monitoring nighttime temperatures, particularly across colder interior portions of Massachusetts. For now, the immediate forecast calls for scattered Sunday showers followed by cooler weather rather than a confirmed frost or freeze.
