Boston, MA – A sharp change in the weather is headed for Massachusetts and southern New England, with a strong cold front expected to bring showers, gusty winds and a 10 to 15 degree temperature drop beginning Sunday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, the front will move through the region Sunday evening into early Monday, followed by a considerably colder air mass.
Rain chances increase as the front approaches. The NWS forecast graphic shows precipitation probabilities Sunday night reaching 45% around Boston and Gloucester, 60% around Hyannis, Newport and New Bedford, and 75% on Nantucket.
Breezy to blustery conditions will accompany the change. Forecast wind gusts Monday afternoon reach around 23 mph in Boston, 25 mph in Hartford, Springfield and Worcester, and approximately 28 mph around Pittsfield.
The bigger difference will be felt after the front passes.
The NWS said temperatures are expected to drop 10 to 15 degrees, with the coldest conditions arriving Monday and Tuesday nights. Overnight lows across southern New England are expected to fall into the 30s and 40s.
The changing conditions could make Monday morning feel dramatically different from the weekend, particularly for residents heading to work or school.
Travelers should also be prepared for wet roads and periods of gusty winds as the front crosses Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
After the showers move out, colder and breezy conditions will take over, delivering a noticeable taste of fall across the region.
