PIKESVILLE, MD – Maryland residents have an opportunity this Saturday to safely dispose of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications as Maryland State Police participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, offering convenient drop off locations across the state with no questions asked.
According to Maryland State Police, residents can bring unwanted prescription medications to any Maryland State Police barrack Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The statewide collection effort is part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, an initiative encouraging households to remove medications that are no longer needed.
Officials say proper disposal helps prevent prescription drug misuse and reduces the risk of medications being accidentally consumed by children, pets or others.
Drop Off Locations Available Statewide
Maryland State Police barracks across the state will participate, providing residents with accessible collection sites.
No questions will be asked when medications are dropped off.
Residents who cannot participate during Saturday's scheduled event can still use secure prescription drug collection boxes available at Maryland State Police barracks year round, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The department also highlighted results from its previous collection effort in April 2026.
During that event, the Glen Burnie barrack collected 261 pounds of medications, followed by Westminster with 244 pounds and Cumberland with 137 pounds.
Additional collections included 128 pounds in North East and 108 pounds in Hagerstown.
Together, those five barracks collected 878 pounds of unwanted medications.
What Residents Should Know
The scheduled statewide event takes place Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to check medication cabinets ahead of the event and identify expired or unwanted prescriptions for disposal.
Those planning to participate should confirm which medication types are accepted before visiting a collection location.
Maryland State Police emphasize that secure collection boxes remain available throughout the year, making safe medication disposal possible beyond this weekend's event.
