Baltimore, MD – A sharp overnight temperature drop is bringing freeze warnings and frost advisories to portions of Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia early Sunday, Oct. 18, with some mountain communities expected to experience temperatures as low as 27 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect from 1 a.m. until 9 a.m. Sunday, primarily across areas west of Interstate 95.
The coldest conditions are expected in sheltered valleys, particularly along and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Temperatures Could Fall Into the Upper 20s Forecasters expect overnight lows ranging from approximately 27 to 38 degrees across the affected region.
Mountain communities in western Maryland, eastern West Virginia and western Virginia face the greatest risk of freezing temperatures.
The National Weather Service forecast includes lows near 27 degrees around Oakland, Maryland, and 28 degrees near Monterey, Virginia.
Other communities, including Cumberland, Hagerstown, Winchester and Harrisonburg, could experience temperatures in the lower to middle 30s.
Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories Issued The cold temperatures could damage or kill sensitive vegetation, particularly in sheltered valleys where frost is more likely to develop.
Residents are encouraged to bring vulnerable plants indoors or cover outdoor vegetation before temperatures drop Saturday night.
Although temperatures will fall into the 30s across much of the region, elevated winds are expected to limit frost formation closer to the Interstate 95 corridor.
Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are forecast to remain comparatively warmer, with temperatures generally near 40 degrees.
Coldest Conditions Expected Before Sunrise The greatest freeze and frost risk is expected between 1 and 9 a.m. Sunday, with temperatures gradually recovering after sunrise.
Residents across affected portions of Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia should check their local advisory status and protect sensitive plants overnight.
