Baltimore, MD – A sharp October cooldown is bringing freezing temperatures to parts of Maryland and the greater Washington region Saturday night, October 17, with overnight lows potentially reaching 26 degrees in the coldest locations. Freeze warnings and frost advisories are in effect for portions of the region west of Interstate 95.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, noticeably colder temperatures are expected Saturday following Friday's cold front, with afternoon highs ranging from 43 to 56 degrees across the forecast area.
A few lingering showers are possible Saturday morning, primarily across southern Maryland and areas south of Interstate 66 in Virginia. Otherwise, dry conditions and improving skies are expected.
Freeze Warning and Frost Advisory Tonight
The greatest concern arrives Saturday night into early Sunday, October 18, as temperatures fall into the 26 to 40 degree range across the region.
The National Weather Service reports that freeze warnings and frost advisories cover portions of its forecast area west of I 95.
The coldest temperatures are expected in inland and higher elevation communities, where freezing conditions could damage sensitive plants and vegetation.
Residents in affected areas should bring potted plants indoors, cover vulnerable outdoor vegetation and take precautions to protect exposed plumbing where necessary.
Sunday Brings Sunshine but Remains Chilly
Conditions improve Sunday, with sunshine returning across much of the region.
Afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach 50 to 57 degrees, although Sunday night will remain chilly, with lows between 33 and 45 degrees.
Monday Temperatures Begin to Recover
By Monday, October 19, temperatures are expected to climb into the 55 to 60 degree range under sunny skies.
Overnight lows Monday are forecast between 39 and 49 degrees, signaling a gradual recovery from the weekend's coldest conditions.
Residents should remember that freezing temperatures are not expected everywhere. The coldest locations west of I 95 face the greatest risk.
