BALTIMORE, MD – Maryland is heading into November with temperatures climbing into the 70s around Baltimore, but a changing NOAA precipitation outlook is raising early questions about Thanksgiving holiday travel and whether rain or snow could become a factor later in the month.
The first week of November looks mild, with Baltimore expected to reach 73 degrees by Wednesday. Farther ahead, federal outlooks favor above normal temperatures while suggesting wetter than normal conditions could return during the two weeks surrounding Thanksgiving.
Baltimore Temperatures Climb Toward 73 Degrees Before Rain Returns According to the National Weather Service, Baltimore will see mostly sunny skies Saturday, Oct. 31, with a high near 63 degrees.
Sunday brings mostly cloudy skies and a high near 64, followed by 67 Monday and 70 Tuesday.
Temperatures climb to around 73 Wednesday, with partly sunny conditions continuing before rain chances increase overnight.
The Weather Service forecasts a 40% chance of showers Wednesday night, increasing to 50% Thursday and Thursday night. Friday also carries a 50% chance of showers.
Maryland residents will turn clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, bringing earlier sunsets and additional darkness during evening travel.
NOAA November Outlook Shows Warmth and Changing Precipitation Trends NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlooks issued Friday, Oct. 30, favor above normal temperatures across Maryland during Nov. 5 9 and Nov. 7 13.
The longer range Nov. 14 27 temperature outlook continues to favor above normal temperatures across Maryland, including the Baltimore area.
Precipitation probabilities change during the month.
During Nov. 5 9, above normal precipitation is favored around Baltimore and portions of eastern Maryland.
That shifts during Nov. 7 13, when below normal precipitation becomes favored across much of Maryland.
By Nov. 14 27, NOAA again favors above normal precipitation across the state, including Baltimore, with probabilities generally around 33 40%.
The period includes Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and the surrounding holiday travel window.
Thanksgiving Holiday Travel: Could Maryland See Rain or Snow? The wetter late November outlook raises questions about whether Thanksgiving travelers could encounter rain or wintry weather.
However, NOAA's extended outlook does not identify a specific holiday storm, snowfall totals or travel disruptions.
Above normal temperatures are favored overall, but individual colder periods remain possible. That means the outlook cannot rule out snow, even though it provides no evidence of a particular snowfall event.
The precipitation outlook also does not establish whether rain or snow will occur on Thanksgiving Day itself.
For now, the more immediate weather change arrives Wednesday night, when shower chances begin increasing across Baltimore.
As Thanksgiving approaches, shorter range forecasts will help determine whether the wetter late November signal develops into rain, snow or dry conditions during the holiday travel period.
