Ocean City, MD – A rapidly intensifying nor'easter is threatening the Mid Atlantic with dangerous coastal flooding, high waves and damaging beach conditions this weekend, with significant impacts expected to continue into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service and NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the storm is intensifying off the Mid Atlantic coast Saturday. Forecasters said the system could approach the New Jersey coast Saturday night into Sunday before turning toward the northeast early next week.
Major coastal flooding is expected along portions of the Mid Atlantic during multiple high tide cycles. NOAA's Friday afternoon forecast showed major flood potential at numerous locations from the Virginia and Maryland coasts through Delaware and New Jersey.
Officials warned that repeated rounds of flooding are possible, potentially leaving low lying coastal roads underwater and affecting homes and businesses near the shoreline.
Beach conditions will also be hazardous. Large breaking waves are expected to produce strong rip currents and beach erosion, with the potential for road closures and property damage. Those conditions could extend from the Carolinas through the Mid Atlantic and into southern New England.
Farther north, heavy rainfall could contribute to inland flooding from northern New Jersey into southern New England through Monday. Powerful winds are also forecast to become a concern as the storm moves north.
Residents and visitors along the Mid Atlantic coast should monitor local National Weather Service forecasts, particularly around high tide, and avoid flooded roads. Conditions and local flood levels may vary considerably along the coastline as the storm evolves.
