Baltimore, MD – Another round of frost and freezing temperatures could spread farther east across Maryland, Virginia and the Washington, D.C., region tonight, potentially affecting communities that escaped the coldest conditions Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, widespread frost and freezing temperatures were recorded west of the Blue Ridge Mountains early Sunday, October 18, officially ending the 2026 growing season in those areas.
Temperatures Already Dropped Into the 20s Some of the coldest readings occurred in sheltered valleys across Virginia and West Virginia, where temperatures fell well below freezing.
The National Weather Service reported the following Sunday morning temperatures:
Mill Gap, VA: 26 degrees Bayard, WV: 26 degrees Martinsburg, WV: 32 degrees Hagerstown, MD: 34 degrees Dulles, VA: 37 degrees Baltimore, MD: 39 degrees Washington, DC: 43 degrees Locations farther east remained somewhat warmer, with temperatures generally in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
Frost Risk Expands Toward Metro Areas Tonight Forecasters expect another cold night Sunday into Monday morning, October 19, as high pressure settles over the region.
The National Weather Service says frost and freezing conditions could develop farther east, including locations closer to the Baltimore and Washington metropolitan areas.
The expanding cold risk could threaten sensitive outdoor plants in communities where the growing season remains active.
Residents Should Prepare Before Nightfall Residents with gardens, flowers and temperature sensitive vegetation should consider covering or moving vulnerable plants indoors before temperatures fall overnight.
Drivers may also encounter frost on exposed surfaces early Monday morning, particularly in colder inland and valley locations.
Although sunshine is expected during the day, overnight temperatures remain the primary concern.
