Portland, ME – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal something far more dangerous than an ordinary Maine snowstorm. As the 2026 27 winter season begins, residents from Portland and Augusta to Bangor and northern Maine should understand what those words mean before the state's most powerful storms arrive.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The terminology is reserved for rare, potentially historic storms when forecasters have high confidence that extreme conditions pose an exceptional threat to lives and critical infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Maine Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" is not simply another description of heavy snowfall or freezing rain.
A Blizzard Warning already indicates dangerous winds and severely restricted visibility. Adding PDS wording signals that forecasters anticipate an extraordinary level of danger.
The designation could also appear in exceptional Ice Storm Warnings when damaging ice accumulation threatens communities and essential services.
Why Could This Matter in Maine?
Maine's coastal communities regularly face powerful nor'easters, while inland and northern areas can experience prolonged snowfall, dangerous winds and extreme winter conditions.
During severe storms, Interstate 95 between Portland, Augusta and Bangor could become hazardous or impassable.
Heavy ice accumulation can bring down trees and electrical lines, potentially leaving residents without heat or electricity during freezing temperatures.
These are examples of possible impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Most winter storms will not receive the designation.
What Should Maine Residents Do?
If PDS wording appears, residents should avoid travel, prepare for potentially dangerous disruptions and follow emergency instructions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic storm is currently forecast for Maine.
However, seeing "Particularly Dangerous Situation" in an official warning means forecasters are communicating an exceptional threat that requires immediate attention.
