Portland, ME – Colder, windy weather will move into Maine and New Hampshire behind a strong cold front Monday, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph in some areas and wind chills dropping sharply overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, strong winds Monday afternoon into Tuesday will usher in wintry feeling conditions. The agency expects wind chills to fall into the 20s to mid 30s across much of its forecast area Monday night.
In Portland, the minimum overnight wind chill is forecast near 35 degrees. Wind chills could fall to around 33 in Sanford and Concord, New Hampshire, 34 in Manchester and 36 near Portsmouth.
Conditions will feel considerably colder farther north and inland. Forecast minimum wind chills include about 20 degrees near Jackman, 21 near Rangeley and Berlin, New Hampshire, and 25 near Rumford. Augusta could experience a wind chill near 33 degrees.
Winds will add to the early season chill. Much of Maine and New Hampshire could see maximum gusts of 25 to 35 mph Monday, with the NWS forecast graphic showing 30 35 mph gusts around Portland and several other locations.
The colder conditions follow the passage of a strong cold front and mark a noticeable change from recent weather. The NWS described the incoming conditions as wintry, but the information released Monday morning does not indicate widespread snow or a winter weather alert.
Residents should expect the coldest apparent temperatures overnight into Tuesday morning, with brisk winds continuing into Tuesday.
