Portland, ME – Residents across portions of Maine and New Hampshire are being urged to protect outdoor plants as temperatures approach freezing early Sunday morning. A widespread frost threat could bring temperatures as low as 32 degrees, potentially killing sensitive vegetation left uncovered overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, a Frost Advisory will be in effect from 2 a.m. until 8 a.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 11 , covering portions of south central and southwestern Maine, along with central and southern New Hampshire.
The advisory includes several populated areas, including Portland, South Portland, Augusta, Waterville, Brunswick, Bath, Biddeford, Saco, Rockland, Camden and Belfast in Maine.
In New Hampshire, affected communities include Manchester, Nashua, Rochester, Dover, Somersworth, Durham, Salem, Derry, Exeter and surrounding areas.
Temperatures are expected to fall to around 32 degrees in some locations , creating conditions favorable for widespread frost formation during the early morning hours.
The National Weather Service warns that sensitive outdoor vegetation could be killed if left uncovered, making Saturday evening an important preparation window for gardeners and homeowners.
Residents are encouraged to move vulnerable potted plants indoors and cover tender outdoor vegetation before temperatures begin falling overnight.
Gardens containing late season vegetables, flowers and other cold sensitive plants may be especially vulnerable to frost damage.
The advisory stretches from coastal communities in southern Maine to inland portions of both states, although temperatures and frost formation may vary by location.
Even areas that remain slightly above freezing could experience frost under favorable overnight conditions.
The Frost Advisory is scheduled to expire at 8 a.m. EDT Sunday , as temperatures begin recovering after sunrise.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts and take protective action Saturday night to reduce the risk of losing sensitive outdoor plants.
