Portland, ME – Maine residents preparing for the 2026 27 winter season could experience warmer than normal temperatures and increased precipitation, according to newly released federal seasonal outlooks. However, significant snowfall, freezing rain and hazardous winter travel remain possible across Portland, Bangor, Lewiston and northern Maine.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, seasonal outlooks issued Thursday, October 15, favor above normal temperatures and precipitation across Maine from November 2026 through January 2027.
What does NOAA predict for Maine this winter?
The temperature outlook places much of Maine within an area showing approximately a 40% to 50% probability of above normal temperatures.
This suggests the three month period is more likely to average warmer than usual, although prolonged freezing temperatures and occasional Arctic cold outbreaks remain possible.
The precipitation outlook also favors above normal conditions across much of the state, with probabilities generally ranging from 33% to 40%.
Importantly, precipitation includes rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain. A wetter than normal winter does not automatically mean above average snowfall.
Will Portland and Bangor see significant snow?
Winter storms remain a concern across Cumberland County, the greater Portland metropolitan area and communities along Interstate 95.
Farther north, Bangor, Augusta, Caribou and Presque Isle could still experience substantial snowfall during individual storms, particularly when temperatures remain below freezing.
National Weather Service briefing materials indicate very strong El Niño conditions are highly likely to continue into winter.
El Niño can influence storm tracks and temperature patterns across the United States, but its effects vary between individual winters.
Seasonal outlooks describe overall climate probabilities rather than predicting specific snowstorms, snowfall totals or travel disruptions.
For Maine, the outlook favors a warmer and potentially wetter early winter season, but major snowstorms, icy roads and dangerous driving conditions remain possible.
Residents should continue monitoring updated National Weather Service forecasts as winter approaches.
