Caribou, ME – Maine residents heading into the Columbus Day holiday Monday, Oct. 12, can expect periods of light rain before a stronger storm system arrives Tuesday, bringing heavier rainfall and the possibility of snow across northern parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the remnants of Isaias will pass south of the Gulf of Maine Sunday night, with light precipitation reaching Downeast Maine. Rainfall totals are expected to remain near one tenth of an inch through Monday.
Additional light rain is forecast across northern Maine on Columbus Day, with temperatures beginning to fall late Monday afternoon.
Colder Temperatures Arrive Monday Night
Temperatures across northern Maine are expected to drop into the upper 20s to mid 30s Monday night, setting the stage for potentially wintry precipitation as another weather system approaches.
Forecasters expect low pressure to enter the region Tuesday morning, producing widespread precipitation through Wednesday.
Rainfall totals between 0.5 and 1.5 inches are forecast across the region, with the lowest amounts expected in the northernmost areas of Maine.
Snow Mix Possible Tuesday
The National Weather Service says lingering cold temperatures could allow brief periods of snow or a rain snow mix north of Presque Isle and Greenville, including portions of the North Woods.
However, relatively warm ground temperatures and a transition to rain should prevent meaningful snow accumulation in most locations.
Significant travel impacts are not currently expected from the wintry precipitation, although motorists should remain alert for changing weather conditions during the Tuesday morning commute.
Rain is expected to continue into Wednesday as the system moves through the region.
Residents traveling during Columbus Day or early in the workweek should monitor updated forecasts, particularly across northern Maine, where temperatures will be coldest.
