Caribou, ME – A sharp shift toward colder weather will bring temperatures into the teens across the Caribou area by early Wednesday, Oct. 28, following a relatively mild start to the week. The National Weather Service expects temperatures to fall to approximately 19 degrees Tuesday night, accompanied by clear skies and lighter winds. The colder conditions will follow Sunday's anticipated high of 61 degrees, creating a 42 degree difference between the two forecast readings over several days.
According to the National Weather Service office in Caribou, the transition will begin Monday as a passing weather system brings a chance of showers, shifting winds and gradually cooler conditions. Monday's afternoon high should reach approximately 58 degrees before temperatures fall to around 27 degrees Monday night. Northwest winds will accompany the colder air, with gusts reaching 26 mph during the day and 22 mph Monday night.
Temperatures Fall Into the Teens by Wednesday Morning Tuesday will bring a more substantial change as afternoon temperatures struggle to reach 42 degrees despite sunny skies. Northwest winds of 11 to 16 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 29 mph, will add a noticeable chill for residents spending time outdoors. The combination of lower temperatures and persistent winds will make Tuesday feel considerably different from the mild conditions expected Sunday and Monday.
The coldest period in the available forecast arrives Tuesday night into early Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to drop to approximately 19 degrees. Clear skies and west winds of 5 to 8 mph are anticipated during this period. Such temperatures are well below freezing and could affect exposed plumbing, outdoor water connections and temperature sensitive equipment left outside.
Wednesday afternoon will offer only a limited recovery, with sunshine pushing temperatures to approximately 45 degrees. By Wednesday night, readings are expected to fall again to around 25 degrees under mostly clear skies. The repeated freezing temperatures mean residents should prepare for several cold mornings rather than treating Tuesday night's drop as an isolated event.
Wind and Cold Could Affect Morning Travel Drivers traveling along U.S. Route 1 and other roads throughout the Caribou area should prepare for colder conditions during the Tuesday and Wednesday morning commutes. The supplied forecast does not indicate accumulating snow or widespread freezing precipitation, but temperatures below freezing can make any existing moisture on untreated surfaces a concern.
Monday's 30% chance of showers will be concentrated mainly before 10 a.m., followed by gradually improving skies. Temperatures are forecast to remain above freezing during Monday afternoon before dropping sharply that night. Motorists should monitor road conditions where lingering moisture could encounter freezing temperatures, although the forecast does not establish that widespread icing will occur.
Temperatures Rebound Later in the Week The colder pattern should begin easing Thursday, when mostly sunny skies are expected to push temperatures back to approximately 56 degrees. A slight chance of rain develops after 2 p.m., with precipitation probability around 20%. Thursday night brings a 30% chance of rain, mainly before midnight, while temperatures remain considerably milder near 40 degrees.
Friday should remain partly sunny with a high near 54 degrees, followed by a low around 31 degrees. Saturday, Oct. 31, is expected to bring mostly sunny skies and a high near 53 degrees, offering a relatively comfortable afternoon for Halloween activities compared with the colder conditions earlier in the week.
The most significant development remains the arrival of subfreezing temperatures Tuesday night. Residents with outdoor pets, exposed water lines or temperature sensitive plants should prepare before temperatures reach the teens.
