Caribou, ME – Maine residents are being urged to prepare for potentially dangerous winter weather as National Weather Service offices serving New England launch Winter Weather Preparedness Week from Sunday, October 25, through Saturday, October 31, 2026.
The campaign comes as Maine approaches the colder months, when heavy snowfall, extreme temperatures, strong winds and rapidly changing road conditions can disrupt travel and daily activities.
According to the National Weather Service office in Caribou, the weeklong initiative will feature daily educational topics designed to help residents understand winter weather hazards, recognize official alerts and prepare before dangerous conditions develop.
NWS Highlights Snow Squalls, Extreme Cold and Winter Warnings The campaign begins with Maine winter weather basics Monday, October 26, followed by an explanation of winter storm watches, warnings and advisories Tuesday.
Wednesday's focus shifts to wind chill, extreme cold, frostbite and hypothermia, emphasizing the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures.
Thursday's educational materials will address additional winter hazards, including high winds, coastal flooding, ice jams and fog.
Friday will focus on snow squalls, which can produce sudden reductions in visibility and hazardous driving conditions.
Maine Residents Encouraged to Prepare Before Winter Storms The campaign concludes Saturday, October 31, with winter weather preparedness guidance and information about staying informed during emergencies.
Residents are encouraged to review emergency supplies, prepare vehicles for winter driving and ensure they can receive weather warnings.
The educational campaign applies to communities across Maine, including northern and coastal areas where winter conditions can create significant transportation challenges.
The announcement does not indicate that a major winter storm is imminent or that a statewide winter storm warning is currently in effect.

The National Weather Service encourages residents to use the awareness week to prepare before winter hazards threaten their communities.
