CARIBOU, ME – An expanding area of below normal temperatures is favored to reach Maine and much of the Northeast Oct. 17 21, following a week that could already bring the first glimpses of early season snow to parts of northern Maine.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, Maine falls within an area favoring below normal temperatures during the Oct. 17 21 period, with probabilities reaching 50 60% across portions of the state. The colder pattern extends southward along the East Coast, signaling a broader shift toward late fall conditions.
The Climate Prediction Center has also identified a slight risk of hazardous cold temperatures on Monday, Oct. 19, across portions of the Northeast, including northern New England. The designation represents a 20 40% probability of temperatures meeting hazardous cold thresholds.
Snow chances are already appearing in northern Maine's shorter range forecast.
The National Weather Service in Caribou forecasts a high near 44 degrees Friday, with rain and snow possible before 2 p.m. Friday night could bring another transition from rain to snow as temperatures fall toward 32 degrees.
Earlier in the week, Caribou could experience northwest wind gusts reaching 37 mph Thursday, following periods of rain Tuesday and Wednesday.
The broader colder pattern also raises questions about early season snow across the Great Lakes and Appalachians, including northern Wisconsin and portions of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. However, the available NOAA outlooks do not confirm snow for those locations, and precipitation type will depend on temperatures and individual weather systems.
NOAA's precipitation outlook favors below normal precipitation across much of the Northeast Oct. 17 21, suggesting the colder pattern does not necessarily mean widespread snowfall.
For Maine residents, the immediate concern is Friday's potential rain to snow transition, followed by an increased likelihood of below normal temperatures Oct. 17 21. Updated National Weather Service forecasts will help determine whether additional snow chances develop as colder air settles into the region.
