Caribou, ME – Maine is entering an active stretch of October weather, with two significant storm systems expected to bring widespread rainfall, accumulating snow in northern areas and potentially strong wind gusts between Tuesday, October 13, and Saturday, October 17.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the first system will spread precipitation across the state Tuesday, beginning around midday in communities including Bangor, Bar Harbor and Greenville. Far eastern Maine may not see precipitation begin until late afternoon.
Rain will continue across much of the region Tuesday evening, with intermittent showers lingering into Wednesday, October 14, particularly across northern Maine.
Forecast rainfall totals generally range from approximately 0.5 to 1.5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible.
While most communities will experience cold rain, accumulating snow is likely in portions of northern Maine.
Areas extending from Moosehead Lake into the North Woods and possibly the St. John Valley could receive light snow accumulation, with amounts reaching 2 inches mainly at higher elevations.
Forecasters indicate most locations receiving snow will see less than an inch, and significant travel disruptions are not currently anticipated.
However, a second weather system arriving Friday, October 16, could bring another round of widespread precipitation and stronger winds.
Rain is expected across much of Maine Friday and Friday night, potentially continuing into Saturday, October 17.
Northern communities could also experience additional snowfall, although forecasters emphasize that significant accumulation is not currently expected and considerable uncertainty remains.
Another concern will be gusty winds, initially arriving from the southeast Friday before shifting to the northwest Saturday.
National Weather Service forecast graphics indicate a potential for wind gusts exceeding 40 mph in portions of the region.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and monitor changing conditions, especially in exposed locations.
The National Weather Service encourages residents across Maine to follow updated forecasts as both systems develop.
