Caribou, ME – A sharp overnight cooldown will bring freezing temperatures to northern Maine and frost toward the Downeast coast Saturday night, October 10, raising concerns for residents with sensitive plants and outdoor vegetation.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall rapidly overnight, producing a hard freeze across northern areas. A Frost Advisory has also been issued for Hancock and Washington counties, including portions of coastal Downeast Maine.
Saturday will remain sunny across much of the region, but afternoon temperatures are expected to reach only the 50s, approximately 5 degrees below normal for this time of year.
The coldest conditions are forecast across northern communities, including Houlton, Presque Isle and Caribou. Forecast temperatures early Sunday could drop to around 25 degrees in Houlton, 26 degrees in Presque Isle and 26 degrees in Caribou.
Farther south, temperatures are expected to approach freezing in communities such as Calais and Machias, while Bangor and Bar Harbor should remain somewhat warmer.
Residents in frost prone locations should consider protecting sensitive outdoor plants before temperatures fall Saturday evening.
A warmer Sunday will provide temporary relief. Increasing clouds are expected to move into Maine from the west, with afternoon highs climbing into the lower 60s.
However, the warmer conditions will not last without additional weather changes.
Rain could develop across southern portions of the forecast area late Sunday night into Monday morning. Temperatures Monday are expected to climb into the mid 60s ahead of an approaching cold front.
Rain is expected Monday and Monday night, followed by another push of colder air. The Weather Service says wintry precipitation could develop across northern areas Tuesday morning.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts, particularly those traveling through northern Maine early Tuesday.
