Caribou, ME – Temperatures will fall near or below freezing across much of Maine tonight, with many communities potentially seeing their first frost or freeze of the season.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, clearing skies and dry conditions will allow temperatures to drop quickly Saturday night into early Sunday. Frost is likely around Bangor and the Downeast region, while a freeze is expected across much of northern Maine.
Forecast lows include 21 degrees near Estcourt, 26 in St. Pamphile, 27 in Dickey, 28 in Van Buren and 29 in Caribou and Fort Kent. Houlton is forecast near 26, while Millinocket could reach 33.
Closer to the coast, temperatures should remain warmer. Bangor is forecast around 38 degrees, with Bar Harbor near 46. Even so, colder inland pockets in the Downeast region could support frost.
The weekend otherwise remains dry, with daytime highs reaching the upper 50s to lower 60s as skies clear.
Attention then turns to a storm system expected early next week. The NWS said uncertainty remains over how much rain, if any, the system will produce, but confidence is increasing that strong winds will develop behind it as the storm moves east.
Forecast wind gusts shown by the NWS increase across much of the area Tuesday, with some locations potentially gusting into the 30 to 40 mph range.
Forecasters said those winds could cause isolated power outages and accelerate falling leaves. Residents should first prepare for tonight's frost and freeze, then monitor updated forecasts as details of next week's rain and wind become clearer.
