Caribou, ME – Strong west winds are expected across northern Maine Tuesday, Oct. 6, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph in some areas after Monday's rain moves out.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, rain Monday will fall mainly across northern Maine before tapering off by mid afternoon. Some northern locations could receive roughly one quarter to one half inch, while very little rain is expected Downeast.
The NWS said west winds will begin increasing Monday night and become stronger Tuesday. Gusts could reach 50 mph, potentially causing isolated power outages. Significant leaf loss is also possible, particularly across northern Maine.
The agency's wind forecast graphic shows widespread gusts around 40 to 45 mph across much of northern and eastern Maine, with pockets near 50 mph. Lower gusts are indicated in some coastal areas.
Conditions will be particularly harsh in Maine's higher terrain. The NWS said Katahdin's summit could experience winds around 60 mph during the day Tuesday, with wind chills around 15 degrees. The agency described those conditions as extremely dangerous for hikers.
Rainfall will be much lighter farther south. The NWS said areas south of Millinocket should generally receive one tenth of an inch or less Monday. A thunderstorm cannot be ruled out north of Millinocket before precipitation ends.
Rain is expected to diminish by mid to late Monday afternoon, with some sunshine possible afterward. Attention then turns to increasing west winds Monday night and Tuesday, when residents should be prepared for strong gusts and the possibility of isolated power outages.
