Caribou, ME – Strong west to northwest winds will sweep across northern Maine Tuesday, Oct. 6, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph across the north before winds diminish Tuesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, gusts of 35 to 45 mph are expected across Downeast Maine. The strongest winds will be focused farther north, where gusts could reach 50 mph in some locations.
The NWS wind forecast shows gusts generally reaching 45 to 50 mph around Caribou and Presque Isle, with 40 to 45 mph gusts indicated around several other northern communities.
Conditions will be more wintry on the highest mountain summits. Forecasters expect wind chills in the mid teens there, while gusts could reach 60 to 65 mph at the highest elevations.
At lower elevations, Tuesday's forecast highs vary substantially across the region. Caribou is forecast near 53 degrees, while temperatures across northern and eastern Maine generally range from the 40s into the 50s. Higher terrain will be colder.
The NWS also expects widespread or areas of frost to develop as winds diminish Tuesday night.
The 60 to 65 mph gust potential applies specifically to the highest mountain elevations and should not be interpreted as the expected wind speed for communities such as Caribou.
Residents across northern Maine should expect gusty conditions through Tuesday, followed by diminishing winds Tuesday night and an increasing opportunity for frost.
