Lake Charles, LA – Periods of heavy rain will affect southwest and central Louisiana and parts of southeast Texas this weekend, with 1 to 2 inches expected and localized totals up to 4 inches possible through early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, a cold front crossing the region Saturday will stall near the Texas Louisiana line as a tropical wave moves across the northern Gulf. Together, the systems will support scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday.
The NWS expects periods of heavy rain separated by breaks. The highest totals are generally forecast across Lower Acadiana, although isolated higher amounts could occur elsewhere.
Rain chances Saturday reach 90% in Morgan City, 85% in Lafayette, 80% in Jennings and 75% in Lake Charles and Alexandria. Morgan City remains at 90% Sunday, while Lafayette and Jennings have an 80% chance.
The Weather Prediction Center places the Morgan City area in a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall Saturday into early Sunday, indicating at least a 15% chance of flash flooding within 25 miles of a point. Much of the remainder of the Lake Charles forecast area is in a Marginal Risk.
Rain chances decrease substantially Monday as the front progresses through the region, with showers expected to wind down late Monday into Tuesday.
Clouds, rain cooled air and the front will keep daytime temperatures near or slightly below normal. Overnight temperatures will remain mild through Tuesday because of elevated moisture.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts and remain alert for localized flooding through the weekend, particularly where repeated heavy downpours occur.
