Lake Charles, LA – Extreme drought has developed across portions of southwest and west central Louisiana, raising concerns about wildfire danger as another stretch of warm, rain free weather continues through the upcoming week.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, the latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows D3 extreme drought conditions across much of interior southwest and west central Louisiana, while D2 severe drought persists across much of the surrounding region.
Forecasters warn that very dry vegetation and low relative humidity will create elevated fire danger Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25, across central and southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas.
The drought has intensified significantly in recent weeks, with approximately 31.25% of the Lake Charles forecast area now experiencing extreme drought, compared with none the previous week.
Severe drought or worse now affects approximately 75.96% of the forecast area, according to the latest drought assessment.
Moderate drought also continues across portions of lower Acadiana and southeast Texas.
Elevated Fire Danger Through Sunday
The National Weather Service warns that dry fuels and low humidity could create conditions favorable for the spread of wildland fires during the afternoon hours.
Several burn bans are already in place across the affected region, and residents should verify local restrictions before conducting any outdoor burning.
Anyone who observes a wildfire should immediately contact their local fire department or call 911.
No Rain Expected Through Thursday
The five day forecast offers little relief from the ongoing drought.
Rain chances remain at 0% Sunday through Thursday, Oct. 29, with daytime temperatures generally ranging from 80 to 86 degrees.
Overnight lows will range from the upper 40s to lower 60s.
Forecasters expect drought conditions to persist, with no substantial rainfall currently anticipated during the upcoming week.
