Kentucky and southern Illinois residents face another freezing November morning as temperatures plunge toward 31 degrees Sunday. Frost could blanket lawns, coat windshields and damage unprotected plants before a dramatic warmup arrives next week.
A Freeze Warning takes effect at 11 p.m. Saturday and continues until 8 a.m. Sunday, covering portions of four states.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, subfreezing temperatures as low as 31 degrees are expected across portions of southern Illinois, western Kentucky, southwest Indiana and southeast Missouri.
The warning includes Paducah, Metropolis, Marion, Carbondale, Cape Girardeau, Evansville and surrounding communities.
A separate Frost Advisory remained in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday, with temperatures near 33 degrees capable of producing frost.
Sunday Freeze Could Damage Plants Across Four States Saturday afternoon offers some relief, with Paducah reaching approximately 57 degrees under mostly sunny skies.
However, temperatures fall toward 32 degrees Saturday night. Widespread frost becomes increasingly likely after 4 a.m. Sunday.
The greatest concern is damage to sensitive vegetation.
The National Weather Service warns that freezing conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also sustain damage.
Residents should cover vulnerable plants, disconnect exposed garden hoses and protect outdoor plumbing where necessary.
Drivers crossing Interstate 24, Interstate 57 and local bridges should check conditions before early Sunday travel.
Frost covered windshields are likely in exposed locations. Isolated slick spots are possible where moisture freezes, although widespread roadway icing is not forecast.
Temperatures Could Jump Nearly 40 Degrees by Tuesday The cold will not last long.
Sunday afternoon temperatures rebound to approximately 62 degrees under sunny skies.
Monday brings another jump, with highs near 68 degrees and light winds.
By Tuesday, temperatures could reach 70 degrees, nearly 40 degrees warmer than the lowest temperatures highlighted in the regional freeze warning.
That shift offers a welcome opportunity for outdoor cleanup, leaf removal and winter preparation.
Wednesday remains pleasant, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 69 degrees.
For now, the five day outlook remains largely dry. No snow or tornado threat is indicated for Paducah.
Although November brings increasing opportunities for winter weather, no specific Thanksgiving snow event is established by this outlook.
