LOUISVILLE, KY – Drivers across portions of southern Kentucky face potentially hazardous travel conditions early Thursday, November 5, as patchy fog reduces visibility to less than 1 mile in some rural and low lying areas during the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, fog is expected to affect portions of southern Kentucky through approximately 8 a.m. EST, or 9 a.m. CST, with the greatest visibility reductions occurring in rural locations and areas where fog collects near the ground.
Forecasters warn that the conditions could create problems for early commuters, particularly along roads where visibility changes suddenly.
Visibility Could Fall Below 1 Mile The National Weather Service reports that patchy fog may become locally thick enough to reduce visibility below 1 mile at times.
The greatest concern is across southern Kentucky, where rural roads and low lying terrain may experience reduced visibility during the early morning hours.
Drivers should be prepared for sudden changes in visibility, especially when traveling through valleys or areas where fog becomes more concentrated.
Although the fog is expected to remain patchy, affected motorists could encounter difficult driving conditions with little advance warning.
Morning Commuters Urged to Use Caution The National Weather Service recommends that drivers allow additional travel time Thursday morning and reduce speeds when encountering fog.
Motorists should use low beam headlights rather than high beams, which can reflect off fog and make visibility worse.
Drivers are also encouraged to increase following distances and remain alert for slow moving vehicles, pedestrians and animals.
These precautions are especially important on rural highways and secondary roads where lighting may be limited.
Fog Expected to Improve Later This Morning The National Weather Service expects the fog threat to diminish around 8 a.m. EST or 9 a.m. CST, depending on location.
Conditions should gradually improve as morning temperatures rise and fog dissipates.
Residents traveling across southern Kentucky should monitor updated weather information and allow extra time for their morning commute.
