Louisville, KY – September 2026 ranked among the five warmest Septembers on record at Louisville, Lexington and Bowling Green, according to National Weather Service climate data.
The National Weather Service in Louisville said all three of its long term climate sites recorded a top five finish for average September temperature.
Louisville recorded an average temperature of 77.9 degrees during September, making it the city's second warmest September on record. Only September 2019, with an average of 79.7 degrees, ranked warmer.
The 2026 average also finished above several other notably warm Septembers in Louisville's climate record, including 1925 at 77.5 degrees and 1881 at 77.1.
Lexington recorded an average September temperature of 74.6 degrees, ranking third warmest. The city's warmest September remains 2019 at 77.5 degrees, followed by 1925 at 76.2.
Bowling Green also reached the top five. Its September average of 77.9 degrees ranked fifth warmest on record. The warmest September there occurred in 1925, when the monthly average reached 79.2 degrees.
The rankings reflect the average temperature across the entire month rather than a single spell of unusually hot weather.
The three climate sites have different historical records, so their temperatures and rankings are specific to each location rather than a statewide Kentucky ranking.
With September complete, the final climate data show that unusually warm conditions were a defining feature of the month at all three National Weather Service climate sites.
