Louisville, KY – Residents across central Kentucky and southern Indiana are preparing for a dramatic weather shift this week as unusually warm October temperatures approaching 90 degrees give way to thunderstorms, gusty winds and the possibility of frost by the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, temperatures Tuesday, Oct. 13, are expected to climb between 85 and 90 degrees, with the warmest conditions near and west of Interstate 65.
The unseasonable warmth will continue Wednesday and Thursday, particularly across southern Kentucky, before a strong cold front brings a noticeable change heading into Friday.
Thunderstorms Return Wednesday
Forecasters expect scattered thunderstorms Wednesday as temperatures reach 85 to 89 degrees across the region.
Although rain chances continue into Thursday, precipitation coverage is expected to become more isolated, with approximately a 20% chance of showers or thunderstorms.
Thursday temperatures could still reach 80 to 87 degrees, keeping conditions unusually warm for the middle of October.
The return of thunderstorms could create wet roads and briefly reduced visibility for commuters, particularly Wednesday.
Friday Brings Sharp Temperature Drop
A cold front is forecast to move through the region Friday, bringing breezy conditions and significantly cooler temperatures.
Afternoon highs Friday are expected to fall into the 68 to 74 degree range, a substantial departure from the near 90 degree warmth earlier in the week.
The cooler pattern will continue into the weekend, potentially creating conditions favorable for frost in some communities.
Saturday Night Frost Risk Reaches 40%
The National Weather Service indicates a 20% to 40% chance of frost Saturday night into Sunday morning, particularly in low lying areas where temperatures can fall more quickly overnight.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants and gardens should monitor updated forecasts as the weekend approaches.
While frost is not guaranteed, the rapid transition from summerlike warmth to chilly overnight conditions could catch residents off guard.
