Louisville, KY – A widespread frost advisory will take effect tonight across much of Kentucky and southern Indiana, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 34 degrees by early Saturday morning. Residents are being urged to protect sensitive outdoor plants before temperatures fall overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the frost advisory remains in effect from midnight EST Saturday, Nov. 7, until 9 a.m. EST. Areas observing Central time will be under the advisory from 11 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday.
The advisory covers dozens of counties across north central, east central, northwestern and south central Kentucky, along with portions of south central Indiana.
Major Kentucky communities included in the advisory are Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Frankfort, Elizabethtown, Richmond, Georgetown, Bardstown and Shelbyville.
Across southern Indiana, affected communities include New Albany, Jeffersonville, Jasper, Scottsburg, Corydon, Salem and Tell City.
Why Tonight's Cold Matters Although temperatures are forecast to remain slightly above freezing in many locations, frost can still develop on exposed surfaces when conditions are favorable.
The National Weather Service warns that frost could damage sensitive outdoor vegetation, including garden plants, flowers and other tender vegetation.
Some sensitive plants may be killed if left uncovered overnight.
What Residents Should Do Before Midnight Residents should consider bringing potted plants indoors or covering vulnerable outdoor vegetation before temperatures reach their overnight lows.
Lightweight frost cloths or other protective coverings can help reduce exposure to the cold.
The advisory is scheduled to expire Saturday morning as temperatures recover after sunrise.
Residents across the affected Kentucky and Indiana counties should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for any changes to the advisory or expected overnight temperatures.
