Louisville, KY – Residents across central Kentucky and southern Indiana should prepare for multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday, October 14, and Thursday, October 15, with strong winds, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall posing potential hazards.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, widespread rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop Wednesday morning and continue into Thursday as several waves of unsettled weather move across the region.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the area under a Level 1 of 5 marginal risk for severe thunderstorms Wednesday, indicating that isolated severe storms are possible.
Wednesday Evening Brings Greatest Storm Concerns
Forecasters expect rain showers to move into the region from the northwest late Wednesday morning, spreading across communities including Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green, Elizabethtown and surrounding areas.
The greatest potential for heavy rainfall and frequent lightning is expected Wednesday evening, when stronger thunderstorms could develop.
The primary weather threats include strong wind gusts, lightning and periods of heavy rain.
The National Weather Service currently indicates medium confidence in the potential for strong thunderstorms.
Storm Chances Continue Into Thursday
Additional rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected Thursday, October 15, potentially bringing repeated rainfall to communities already affected by Wednesday's storms.
Heavy downpours could temporarily reduce visibility on highways and create standing water in poorly drained areas.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 65, Interstate 64 and Interstate 75 should remain alert for changing road conditions during heavier rainfall.
Outdoor activities could also be disrupted by thunderstorms, particularly during periods of frequent lightning.
Residents Encouraged to Monitor Weather Updates
Although widespread severe weather is not currently forecast, isolated storms could produce damaging winds.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, keep weather alerts enabled and move indoors when thunder is heard.
The National Weather Service encourages continued monitoring of updated forecasts as storm timing and severity become clearer.
