LOUISVILLE, KY – A slow moving weather system is expected to bring multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorms across Kentucky on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Thursday, Oct. 15, raising concerns about localized flash flooding as some communities could receive up to 4 inches of rainfall.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, widespread rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1 inch are forecast across the region, with localized accumulations of 2 to 4 inches possible, particularly west of Interstate 65.
Wednesday Afternoon Brings Heaviest Rain Threat
Forecasters expect several strong thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening, potentially producing intense downpours over short periods.
The slow moving front could act as a conveyor belt of moisture, allowing repeated waves of rainfall to move across the same communities.
Areas north and west of the Bluegrass Parkway face some of the greatest rainfall concerns.
The NWS estimates Louisville has a 28% chance of receiving at least 2 inches of rain.
Other locations face higher probabilities, including Jasper at 45% and Salem at 37%, while Lexington has an 18% chance.
Localized Flash Flooding Remains Possible
Forecasters currently express low confidence in the overall flash flooding threat because the exact placement of repeated heavy rainfall remains uncertain.
However, locations experiencing multiple storms could see rapidly accumulating water in low lying areas and poorly drained roadways.
Communities farther southeast, including areas near Lake Cumberland, may receive considerably less rainfall.
Residents Should Prepare for Changing Conditions
Drivers traveling Wednesday afternoon and evening should remain alert for reduced visibility, standing water and potentially flooded roads.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and any flood related warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
Although widespread flooding is not currently anticipated, localized flash flooding remains possible where repeated thunderstorms produce excessive rainfall.
