Louisville, Kentucky – Heat index values could reach the mid 100s Tuesday as oppressive heat returns, with a Heat Advisory west of I 65.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the Heat Advisory will be in effect Tuesday afternoon along and west of Interstate 65. The advisory could be extended through midweek as high heat and humidity persist.
Heat index values are expected to range from the upper 90s into the mid 100s, particularly west of I 65. High dew points will add to the heat stress, and the oppressive conditions could last several days.
The Weather Service's Tuesday afternoon HeatRisk map places Louisville, Bowling Green, Owensboro, Elizabethtown and other communities in the major risk category. Much of the region, including areas around Lexington, Frankfort, Richmond and Campbellsville, is also shown at that level.
A major HeatRisk can affect anyone without effective cooling or adequate hydration. Impacts are also possible for some health systems, heat sensitive industries and infrastructure.
People working or spending time outside should hydrate before becoming thirsty and take frequent breaks in air conditioned areas or shade. Residents without reliable cooling should plan ahead for Tuesday afternoon and the potential for additional days of excessive heat.
Travelers along I 65 and other regional routes should also avoid leaving children or pets in parked vehicles, where temperatures can rise rapidly.
The heat threat begins Tuesday and has the potential to persist for a few days. Residents should monitor National Weather Service updates because the Heat Advisory could be expanded in time through midweek.
