Louisville, KY – Thanksgiving travelers across Kentucky could encounter a taste of winter as a long range outlook raises the possibility of colder weather and scattered snow showers during the holiday week. Louisville, Lexington and eastern Kentucky are among the areas where residents may be watching for changing conditions ahead of Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Midwest forecast region could experience colder, more winterlike conditions with scattered snow showers or flurries from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026.
Kentucky is included in that regional outlook alongside Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. The publication mentions possible brief travel slowdowns where snow develops but does not provide snowfall totals, accumulation probabilities or specific timing for Kentucky cities.
The state's geography could make a difference. Louisville and Lexington typically experience different early season conditions than the higher elevations of eastern Kentucky, where colder temperatures can support snowfall even when lower elevations receive rain.
Communities around Jackson and the Appalachian foothills may therefore experience different precipitation types than Louisville or western Kentucky during the same weather system.
NOAA's Oct. 15 November outlook favors above normal temperatures across portions of the Great Lakes region. However, those broader monthly probabilities do not establish a specific temperature or snowfall forecast for Kentucky during Thanksgiving week.
For holiday travelers, I 64 between Louisville and Lexington, I 65 through central Kentucky and I 75 across eastern and central Kentucky are important routes to monitor if winter weather develops.
No specific highway disruptions have been forecast by the Almanac.
Could Kentucky see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Yes, early season snowfall is possible, particularly in higher elevations. However, the regional projection does not confirm snow for Louisville, Lexington or other Kentucky communities during the holiday.
Residents should monitor National Weather Service forecasts closer to Thanksgiving for updated snowfall expectations, precipitation types and potential travel impacts.
