Louisville, KY – Kentucky’s first real taste of sustained autumn cold may have to wait, with the weather pattern for Oct. 12 18 favoring warmer than normal temperatures and a wetter than normal week.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, favors above normal temperatures across Kentucky. Above normal precipitation is also favored during the seven day period.
The temperature outlook gives warmth the advantage when the entire week is averaged together. That could keep afternoons feeling relatively mild for mid October from Louisville and Lexington to Bowling Green and eastern Kentucky.
October nights are another matter. Even during a warmer than normal week, clear and calmer periods can allow temperatures to fall considerably after sunset. Kentucky could therefore still experience some crisp, chilly mornings between milder days.
Frost cannot be predicted from this outlook alone. CPC does not provide specific daily minimum temperatures at this range, so any frost potential would need to emerge in shorter range National Weather Service forecasts.
Rain also looks more likely to play a role in the overall pattern. Above normal precipitation is favored for Oct. 12 18, but the outlook does not specify rainfall amounts, storm timing or how many days will be wet.
Residents should not interpret the wetter signal as a forecast for continuous rain. Instead, Kentucky has increased odds of finishing the seven day period with more precipitation than is typical.
For now, the state’s mid October theme is mild fall weather, opportunities for rain and cooler nights between systems . Specific rain chances and any nighttime frost concerns should become clearer as Oct. 12 approaches.
