Louisville, KY – Kentucky residents face a dramatic weather shift this week as near record October heat gives way to thunderstorms, potentially heavy rainfall and a strong cold front that could bring the first significant taste of fall by Saturday, Oct. 17.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, Tuesday, Oct. 13, will feature abundant sunshine and afternoon temperatures ranging from 87 to 91 degrees, with some communities approaching record highs.
Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Possible Wednesday
Weather conditions are expected to change Wednesday, Oct. 14, as showers and thunderstorms spread into central Kentucky and southern Indiana from the west.
Forecasters indicate a 70% chance of precipitation Wednesday, with temperatures ranging from 79 to 87 degrees.
Some thunderstorms could produce heavy downpours, creating the potential for localized flash flooding, particularly in low lying and poorly drained areas.
Residents should monitor weather alerts and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
Rain and thunderstorm chances continue Thursday, Oct. 15, with a 40% precipitation probability and afternoon highs between 80 and 88 degrees.
Strong Cold Front Brings Major Cooldown
A stronger push of cooler air is expected Friday, Oct. 16, as a cold front moves through the region.
Friday's forecast calls for highs between 65 and 75 degrees, a noticeable drop from the near 90 degree temperatures earlier in the week.
By Saturday, Oct. 17, afternoon temperatures could struggle to climb beyond the upper 50s and lower 60s, with forecast highs ranging from 57 to 61 degrees.
That represents a temperature difference of approximately 30 degrees between Tuesday's warmest conditions and Saturday's coolest forecast highs.
Weekend Frost Potential Increases
The National Weather Service also highlights increasingly cold mornings and a growing potential for frost over the weekend.
Although specific overnight lows were not included in the forecast graphic, residents with sensitive outdoor plants should monitor updated temperature forecasts.
The transition from summerlike heat to much cooler conditions could be particularly noticeable for outdoor workers, travelers and residents planning weekend activities.
Forecasters encourage residents to stay informed as rainfall, flooding potential and weekend temperatures become clearer.
