Louisville, KY – Residents across central Kentucky and southern Indiana could experience a dramatic weather reversal this week, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees before a cold front brings much cooler conditions and the possibility of frost by Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, temperatures will climb sharply Monday, Oct. 12, and Tuesday, Oct. 13, following a cool and foggy Sunday night. The warming trend will give way to thunderstorms and a significant temperature drop later in the week.
Columbus Day Heat Approaches 90 Degrees
Monday afternoon highs are forecast between 83 and 87 degrees, bringing unusually warm conditions for the Columbus Day holiday.
Tuesday will be even warmer, with temperatures reaching 86 to 90 degrees. Areas west of the Interstate 65 corridor have the greatest potential to approach 90 degrees.
The warm conditions will continue Wednesday, with highs ranging from 84 to 88 degrees.
Rain chances remain limited until Wednesday, when the National Weather Service forecasts a 20% to 40% chance of thunderstorms.
Cold Front Brings Sharp Temperature Drop
Thursday highs are expected to range from 78 to 84 degrees before a cold front moves through Friday.
Temperatures will fall into the 69 to 75 degree range Friday, with additional rain possible as the front passes.
By Saturday, Oct. 17, afternoon highs are forecast to reach only 57 to 61 degrees, nearly 30 degrees cooler than Tuesday's warmest forecast temperatures.
First Frost Possible Sunday Morning
The National Weather Service is also monitoring the potential for frost Sunday morning, Oct. 18, as colder air settles across the region.
Although specific Sunday morning low temperatures were not provided in the forecast graphic, conditions may become cold enough for frost in some locations.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants and gardens should monitor updated forecasts as the weekend approaches.
The possibility of frost remains uncertain, but the expected cooldown marks a significant departure from the summerlike temperatures early in the week.
