Jackson, KY – Residents across eastern Kentucky should prepare for strong, gusty winds Saturday, October 10, as the remnants of Hurricane Isaias move toward the region. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph in portions of southeastern Kentucky, prompting a Wind Advisory that will remain in effect overnight into Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Jackson , a Wind Advisory takes effect at noon Saturday for Bell, Harlan and Letcher counties and continues until 5 a.m. EDT Sunday, October 11.
Forecasters expect widespread wind gusts between 20 and 35 mph across eastern Kentucky, with stronger gusts possible in exposed locations and higher elevations near the Virginia border.
Within the advisory area, gusts ranging from 35 to 50 mph are possible at elevations above 1,500 feet and in valleys immediately northwest of Pine, Black and the Log Mountains.
The strongest winds are expected from late Saturday morning through the afternoon, coinciding with the arrival of the leading bands of rain associated with the approaching system.
Travel conditions could become hazardous , particularly for high profile vehicles traveling through mountain passes and exposed roadways.
Strong gusts may also blow around unsecured outdoor objects and create difficult driving conditions for motorists.
Communities near Middlesboro, Harlan and Whitesburg should pay particular attention to changing conditions as the system moves through the region.
Outside the advisory area, widespread gusts up to 35 mph remain possible, including portions of the Lake Cumberland region and surrounding eastern Kentucky communities.
Although Isaias has weakened from its earlier hurricane classification, its remnants are still expected to generate gusty conditions across the area.
Residents should secure loose outdoor furniture, use caution while driving and monitor updated weather statements throughout Saturday evening.
