Wichita, KS – Thanksgiving travelers across Kansas could encounter colder late November weather as a long range outlook raises questions about early season snow. Wichita, Topeka, Kansas City and Salina are among the communities watching conditions ahead of Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its North Central forecast region, which includes Kansas, favors colder conditions during the Nov. 23–26 holiday period, with possible light snow highlighted farther north in the northern Plains.
The outlook does not specifically predict snow for Wichita, Topeka or Kansas City. It also provides no snowfall totals, storm timing or Kansas highway forecasts.
That distinction matters because Kansas weather can change significantly across relatively short distances.
Northern communities near Concordia and Hiawatha may experience different temperatures than Wichita, Hutchinson and areas closer to the Oklahoma border.
Western Kansas, including Hays and Garden City, can also experience colder winds and changing travel conditions when late autumn weather systems cross the Plains.
Snow is historically possible in Kansas during November, but that does not establish a snowy Thanksgiving this year.
NOAA's broader November outlook favors above normal temperatures across portions of the northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley.
Those regional monthly probabilities should not be interpreted as a specific forecast for Kansas or for Thanksgiving Day.
A warmer than average month can still include freezing nights and brief cold spells.
Looking ahead, winter 2026 27 will be influenced by larger climate patterns, including El Niño. However, El Niño does not determine whether an individual snowstorm will affect Kansas.
For holiday travelers, I 70 through Kansas City, Topeka, Salina and Hays, along with I 35 through Wichita and eastern Kansas, are major routes to monitor.
Could Kansas see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Yes. November snowfall is possible, but the supplied Almanac outlook does not confirm snow anywhere in Kansas during the holiday period.
Drivers should check National Weather Service forecasts and Kansas 511 closer to departure for temperatures, precipitation timing, wind conditions and road reports.
