Greenwood County, KS – Residents are being warned about an ongoing scam involving callers allegedly impersonating law enforcement officers and claiming victims must pay money to avoid arrest.
According to the Greenwood County Sheriff ’s Office, scammers are contacting residents and telling them they have an outstanding warrant or another legal problem that requires immediate action.
Authorities said the impostors may threaten victims with arrest if they refuse to send money. Callers may also attempt to keep potential victims on the phone, preventing them from contacting family members or law enforcement to verify the claims.
Another warning sign is a caller discouraging someone from visiting the law enforcement agency they claim to represent, the sheriff’s office said. Scammers may tell victims they cannot come to the office, speak with anyone else or verify the information in person.
Legitimate law enforcement officers will not demand payment over the phone to prevent an arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.
Residents should not provide money, gift cards, banking information or other personal information to an unsolicited caller. Authorities also warned that requests for cash or Bitcoin should be treated as red flags.
Anyone receiving a suspicious call should hang up and independently find the official phone number for the agency the caller claims to represent. Residents should not rely on a callback number provided by the suspicious caller.
Anyone who believes they have received a scam call or already provided money or personal information is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
“When in doubt, hang up and verify,” the sheriff’s office advised.
