Dodge City, KS – Residents across southwest Kansas should prepare for a potentially significant rainfall event this weekend, with widespread accumulating rain expected Saturday night, Oct. 24, through early Monday, Oct. 26. Heavy downpours could cause flooding on roads, in low lying neighborhoods and in areas with poor drainage.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, locations along and west of U.S. Highway 83 have a 40% to 70% probability of receiving more than 2 inches of rain during the 48 hour period ending at 7 a.m. Monday.
Forecasters have also identified a slight risk of excessive rainfall across portions of southwest Kansas from 7 p.m. Saturday through 7 a.m. Monday.
Saturday, Oct. 24 — Rain Chances Increase
Rain could begin as early as Saturday afternoon in areas west of U.S. Highway 83, with the better opportunity for heavy rainfall developing Saturday night.
Communities around Garden City, Liberal and surrounding portions of southwest Kansas should closely monitor the forecast.
Sunday, Oct. 25 — Greatest Flooding Concern
Sunday will bring continued opportunities for heavy rainfall, including downpours capable of overwhelming drainage systems.
The Weather Prediction Center's outlook identifies a Level 2 of 4 slight risk of excessive rainfall across portions of the region.
That category indicates a heightened possibility of flash flooding, particularly in flood prone locations.
Monday, Oct. 26 — Rainfall Totals Add Up
The main period of concern continues through early Monday morning.
Some locations could receive more than 2 inches of rain, although exact totals will vary depending on where the heaviest rainfall develops.
What Residents Should Know
The National Weather Service warns that torrential rainfall may flood roads, fields, basements and low lying areas. Rapid rises on streams and creeks are also possible.
Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roads, even when the water appears shallow.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts and any flood alerts issued during the weekend.
The outlook indicates a potential flooding threat, but it does not establish that flooding will occur at every location.
