DODGE CITY, KS — Southwest Kansas residents could wake up to near freezing temperatures this weekend as a surge of colder nighttime air sends temperatures into the lower 30s Friday night, Oct. 16, with some communities potentially dipping into the upper 20s by Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, temperatures across southwest Kansas are forecast to fall between 30 and 35 degrees Friday night into Saturday, Oct. 17 , bringing chilly conditions to communities throughout the region.
Forecasters indicate a 25% to 35% chance that a few locations could briefly experience temperatures in the upper 20s, increasing the potential for localized freezing conditions.
The latest forecast map shows overnight lows near 32 degrees in Dodge City, 30 degrees in Garden City, 30 degrees in Liberal and 30 degrees in Scott City.
Farther west, Tribune could drop to approximately 29 degrees, while Goodland and Ulysses are forecast near 30 degrees.
Other communities, including Hays and Hill City, are expected to reach around 32 degrees, while Great Bend could remain slightly warmer near 34 degrees.
Temperatures near or below freezing may pose concerns for sensitive outdoor plants, gardens and exposed vegetation, particularly in locations where readings briefly fall below 32 degrees.
Residents with vulnerable plants may want to consider protective measures before temperatures begin falling Friday evening.
Drivers traveling overnight or early Saturday morning should also prepare for colder conditions, although the forecast does not indicate that icy roads or winter precipitation are expected.
The coldest temperatures are anticipated late Friday night into early Saturday morning, when overnight cooling typically reaches its lowest point.
While widespread temperatures in the 20s are not guaranteed, the National Weather Service indicates that isolated locations have a measurable chance of dropping below 30 degrees.
Residents across southwest Kansas are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as Friday approaches, particularly if they have outdoor plants, agricultural interests or early Saturday travel plans.
