Dodge City, KS – Residents across southwestern Kansas should prepare for the possibility of severe thunderstorms Tuesday, Oct. 13, with large hail, damaging winds and even an isolated tornado among the potential hazards as unsettled weather moves into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, showers and thunderstorms are expected from Tuesday afternoon through early Thursday morning, with locally heavy rainfall possible across portions of western and central Kansas.
Severe Storms Possible Tuesday Evening
Forecasters say thunderstorms developing Tuesday evening could become severe, producing large hail and damaging wind gusts.
An isolated tornado also cannot be ruled out.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of southwestern Kansas, including areas near Dodge City and Liberal, under a Level 2 of 5 slight risk for severe thunderstorms.
Surrounding communities face a Level 1 of 5 marginal risk, indicating that isolated severe storms remain possible outside the primary risk area.
The National Weather Service says severe thunderstorm chances could continue into Wednesday, Oct. 14.
Heavy Rain Could Accompany Storms
In addition to severe weather, locally heavy rainfall is expected from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday night.
Forecast rainfall totals range from approximately half an inch to 1 inch as far west as Dodge City and Hays, with higher amounts possible farther east.
Areas farther west are expected to receive less precipitation.
Heavy downpours could temporarily reduce visibility and create hazardous driving conditions, particularly during periods of stronger thunderstorms.
Residents Urged to Monitor Forecasts
The potential for large hail and damaging winds makes Tuesday evening an important period for residents to monitor changing conditions.
Anyone with outdoor plans or travel scheduled Tuesday night should remain alert for updated forecasts and possible weather warnings.
Residents should also identify a safe indoor location in case severe thunderstorms develop.
The forecast remains subject to change as meteorologists refine the expected storm timing and coverage.
