Dodge City, KS – Residents across southwest and central Kansas should prepare for developing thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon, October 13, as an approaching cold front creates conditions favorable for strong to severe storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, thunderstorms are expected to develop across portions of the region Tuesday afternoon, with some storms potentially reaching severe intensity.
Forecasters identify large hail and damaging wind gusts as the primary threats, while locally heavy rainfall is also possible.
Severe Storms Could Develop Tuesday Afternoon
The National Weather Service expects the best opportunity for thunderstorm development along and east of a cold front extending from Liberal through Dodge City toward St. John.
Communities near Liberal, Dodge City, Garden City, Great Bend and surrounding areas should monitor conditions as the afternoon progresses.
The severe weather outlook highlights portions of southwest and central Kansas, with the threat varying by location.
Storms that develop along the frontal boundary could strengthen as they move through an environment supportive of severe thunderstorms.
Large Hail and Damaging Winds Are Main Concerns
Large hail could damage vehicles, roofs and exposed property, while strong thunderstorm winds may create hazardous driving conditions and bring down tree limbs.
Locally heavy rainfall could also reduce visibility on highways, including portions of U.S. 50, U.S. 54 and U.S. 283.
The National Weather Service also identifies a conditional tornado threat in south central Kansas if the colder air arrives more slowly than currently anticipated.
That possibility depends on the timing and position of the frontal boundary and does not mean tornadoes are expected throughout the region.
Residents Urged to Monitor Weather Updates
Because thunderstorm development will depend on afternoon conditions, the exact locations and intensity of severe storms remain subject to change.
Residents should consider moving vehicles into covered parking where available, securing lightweight outdoor items and keeping multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
Anyone traveling Tuesday afternoon or evening should monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to seek shelter if severe thunderstorms approach.
