Dodge City, KS – A developing Rockies storm could have impacts well beyond the areas that may see mountain snow next week, with western Kansas potentially facing stronger winds and sharply different conditions depending on the system’s eventual track.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado, is monitoring the storm for roughly Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 12 14. Forecasters say confidence is increasing in accumulating snow along Colorado’s Continental Divide, but considerable uncertainty remains over the system’s track, strength and timing.
That uncertainty matters for Kansas.
The Pueblo outlook shows possible storm tracks emerging from the Rockies toward the central Plains. If the system follows a track favorable for keeping Kansas on its warmer and drier side, stronger winds and dry conditions could develop east of the mountains.
A different track could bring more moisture and cooler conditions into portions of the central Plains.
The Colorado forecast offers an example of just how sensitive conditions will be to the storm’s eventual path. NWS Pueblo said southeast Colorado could range from warm, windy and dry to showery, cooler and wet.
Kansas is farther downstream, so it is too early to assign specific wind speeds, rainfall amounts or temperatures based on the Pueblo outlook alone. The source also does not indicate snow for Kansas.
The larger signal is that a potentially significant change in the western and central U.S. weather pattern is taking shape for next week. Colorado’s mountains currently have the clearest accumulating snow signal, while areas farther east could experience wind, temperature and precipitation changes as the storm moves out of the Rockies.
Readers in western Kansas should watch subsequent National Weather Service forecasts as Oct. 12 14 approaches. The eventual storm track will determine whether the bigger story becomes strong, dry winds or cooler weather with a better opportunity for precipitation .
