Dodge City, KS – Residents across southwest Kansas could finally see a break in the region's extended dry weather Saturday, Oct. 24, as rain chances climb to 60% in some communities and scattered thunderstorms become possible after another rain free workweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, dry conditions are expected to continue across southwest Kansas through Friday, Oct. 23, before an approaching weather system brings the next opportunity for measurable rainfall Saturday.
The agency's Monday, Oct. 19, forecast shows a 50% 60% probability of precipitation around Dodge City , with similar chances extending across several neighboring communities.
Garden City, Ness City, Kinsley, Meade and portions of the surrounding region are also included in areas with projected rain probabilities reaching 50% 60%.
Farther west, rainfall chances are generally lower, with some communities near the Colorado border seeing probabilities closer to 20% 40%.
The anticipated change comes as a trough of low pressure moves into the Plains, potentially generating scattered rain showers and embedded thunderstorms.
While thunder is possible, forecasters indicate that the ingredients needed for strong or severe thunderstorms may be limited.
Current weather models suggest relatively weak wind shear and atmospheric instability, reducing the potential for organized severe storms across the region.
Saturday, Oct. 24, represents the next meaningful opportunity for rainfall , although the forecast does not guarantee measurable precipitation at every location.
The weather service has not provided specific rainfall totals in its initial outlook, and the eventual coverage and intensity of showers could change as the weekend approaches.
For residents, farmers and travelers across Ford County and neighboring southwest Kansas communities, the forecast offers a potential shift from the prolonged dry pattern.
Outdoor activities planned for Saturday could encounter scattered showers, but widespread severe weather is not currently anticipated.
Residents should continue monitoring updated forecasts at weather.gov/ddc as the timing and coverage of Saturday's rainfall become clearer.
