Dodge City, Kansas – Fall begins Tuesday with dry weather in southwest Kansas, but rain chances increase sharply Wednesday night and peak Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a storm system will enter the central Plains beginning Wednesday evening. Periods of rain will then spread across southwest Kansas, with the best opportunity for precipitation Thursday into early Friday morning.
In Dodge City, the precipitation chance rises from 10% Wednesday afternoon to 30% Wednesday evening and 45% Wednesday night. Chances increase to 65% early Thursday before reaching 80% during parts of the day.
Other southwest Kansas communities could see even higher probabilities. Garden City reaches an 85% chance Thursday, while Syracuse and Ulysses also reach 85%. Scott City peaks around 85%, and Elkhart reaches 85% early Thursday.
The Weather Service cautioned that Thursday will not necessarily bring continuous rain. Precipitation is expected to arrive in waves, with dry periods between rounds.
Drivers should be prepared for changing road conditions Wednesday night and Thursday, particularly during periods of heavier rainfall. Anyone with outdoor work or travel planned should monitor conditions because the timing and location of individual rounds could affect communities differently.
The wetter pattern is a notable change as astronomical fall begins Tuesday. While the immediate concern is the system arriving Wednesday evening, southwest Kansas could have another opportunity for rain during the weekend.
Rain chances continue into early Friday before generally decreasing during the day. The Weather Service also indicates another round of rain Saturday, so residents should continue checking updates as the first week of fall progresses.
