Quad Cities, IA/IL – A three day stretch of heavy rain has ended across the Quad Cities region after dumping at least 3 inches on many communities and more than 4 inches in some locations, leading to rising waterways and overflowing creeks.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office Thursday, rain falling from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1 landed on already saturated ground. The conditions caused many creeks to go out of their banks and produced rises on tributaries and the mainstem Mississippi River.
Some of the heaviest rainfall occurred in eastern Iowa.
Bettendorf in Scott County recorded 4.85 inches, while a location north of Ainsworth in Washington County received 4.78 inches. Pleasant Valley reported 4.49 inches, while Wapello and Riverdale each recorded 4.21 inches. Muscatine reported 4.18 inches.
Official climate sites also recorded significant totals. Davenport International Airport measured 3.57 inches, while Quad Cities International Airport in Moline, Illinois, received 3.03 inches.
Radar estimates show a broad corridor of 3 inches or more extending across portions of eastern Iowa and into the Quad Cities, with additional heavy totals extending into western Illinois.
Although the prolonged wet stretch has ended, the effects of the rainfall may linger because of saturated soil and elevated waterways.
The National Weather Service said a more detailed summary of the multiday rainfall event will be released in the coming days.
