Des Moines, IA — Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread across Iowa Wednesday evening, Oct. 28, and continue into early Thursday, Oct. 29, with a risk of isolated severe storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds, particularly across northwestern portions of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the primary severe weather window runs from 6 p.m. Wednesday until midnight, although showers and non severe thunderstorms could develop before and after that period.
Large hail is the main severe weather concern , with damaging wind gusts also possible, especially across far northern Iowa.
Forecasters have identified a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk, classified as Marginal, across portions of northwest and north central Iowa.
Communities near Spencer, Storm Lake, Algona and Fort Dodge are among areas that could experience stronger thunderstorms during the evening hours.
The National Weather Service also noted a low tornado risk in far northern Iowa, although the greater tornado concern is expected to remain across neighboring Minnesota.
Storms Could Affect Evening Travel
Thunderstorms moving across the region could bring periods of heavy rain, lightning and reduced visibility for motorists traveling along Interstate 35, U.S. Highway 20 and other major routes.
Residents should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions, particularly during evening commutes and overnight travel.
While the highest severe weather risk is concentrated across northwestern Iowa, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread into other portions of the state.
The Marginal Risk designation means isolated severe thunderstorms are possible, but widespread severe weather is not currently anticipated.
Residents are encouraged to secure vulnerable outdoor belongings, keep weather alerts enabled and identify a safe indoor location if warnings are issued.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring storm development throughout Wednesday evening.
