DE WITT, IA – Major flooding continues along the Wapsipinicon River near De Witt, with water levels expected to crest early Saturday, Oct. 10, while a separate Flood Warning remains in effect along the Iowa River near Marengo.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, Flood Warnings cover portions of Clinton, Scott, Benton and Iowa counties, with river conditions varying between major and minor flooding.
Near De Witt, the Wapsipinicon River at the De Witt 4S gauge stood at 12.5 feet and was steady as of 7:30 p.m. CDT Friday, exceeding its official flood stage of 11 feet.
Forecasters expect the river to rise slightly before reaching a crest of 12.6 feet shortly after midnight Saturday.
At 12.5 feet, floodwaters affect old U.S. Highway 61 near the river. The National Weather Service continues to classify flooding at this location as major.
The Wapsipinicon River is forecast to fall below flood stage Monday afternoon, although the Flood Warning remains in effect until late Monday night.
Farther west, the Iowa River at Marengo continues to experience minor flooding affecting portions of Benton and Iowa counties.
The river stood at 15.8 feet and was falling as of 7 p.m. Friday, remaining above its 15 foot flood stage.
At 16 feet, floodwaters affect agricultural land along the river, with water several feet deep in some locations.
The Iowa River is expected to fall below flood stage late Friday night, with levels continuing to decline toward 10.5 feet by Friday, Oct. 16. The Flood Warning at Marengo remains in effect until Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service urges motorists to avoid flooded roads and never drive around barricades. Residents should also exercise caution near riverbanks while water levels remain elevated.
The next flood statement is expected by Saturday morning, Oct. 10. Major flooding near De Witt is expected to persist through the weekend, while river conditions near Marengo should continue improving as water levels recede.
