Des Moines, IA – Iowa residents could experience a dramatic shift in weather this week, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees Sunday and Monday before thunderstorms, potentially including a few strong storms, move into the state Tuesday evening and Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Des Moines, dry and unusually warm conditions will continue into early next week, with breezy winds and partly to mostly sunny skies preceding a more unsettled midweek weather pattern.
Temperatures Could Reach 89 Degrees
Sunday, October 11, will bring afternoon highs between 86 and 89 degrees across central Iowa, with partly sunny skies and breezy conditions.
Winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 mph, potentially creating gusty conditions for outdoor activities and travel.
Monday, October 12, will remain unusually warm, with mostly sunny skies and highs again ranging from 86 to 89 degrees.
Overnight lows Monday night are forecast between 53 and 69 degrees.
Strong Storms Possible Tuesday Night
The weather pattern begins changing Tuesday, October 13, as temperatures range from 68 to 82 degrees.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across southern Iowa Tuesday evening before spreading into a broader portion of the state Wednesday.
The National Weather Service indicates that a few strong thunderstorms are possible, although specific severe weather threats and locations have not yet been detailed.
Cooler Temperatures Arrive Wednesday
By Wednesday, October 14, afternoon highs are expected to fall to between 64 and 73 degrees as showers and thunderstorms become more widespread.
That represents a noticeable cooldown compared with the upper 80 degree temperatures expected Sunday and Monday.
Residents should prepare for changing weather conditions, particularly during Tuesday evening and Wednesday travel.
Motorists may encounter wet roads and reduced visibility during periods of heavier rainfall.
